One of my National Officiating Assignments was the Redland Bicycle Classic. It is so much fun to work an event on the National Racing Calendar. The race has Police escorts, motor officials, Comm cars, a race caravan, and all of the hoopula that goes along with it. I was the Chief Judge for the Men's Event. I got to work Registration for the first time, checking licenses, resolving problems, assigning time trial start times. It was quite the experience. It was a good thing James Abbott was there making sure that I was doing things right. My friend, Sean Weide,
who was in my "Cat. A" class was there with Team Type I. The local newspaper had requested to do a story on me and they wanted someone to take pictures of me at a race. I enlisted Sean to be my "personal photograper". He pulled out his camera and took pictures of me during the whole event. I would get back to my hotel after each event to an email from Sean full of pictures he had taken that day. The first day was a time trial, the women went first, when it was time for me to go to the finish line my ride there was a Convertible Corvette. It was pretty fun cruising to the finish line in that car, if only Sean had been there then, I would have loved a picture of me in that car.
Redlands was a great experience and a wonderful opportunity. I enjoyoed working with Janeen and Taylor as my assistant judges. It was great how well the men and women's judging crews worked together to make the event successful for all of us.
