Squawker Classic - Durango

We love the Collegiate Races. The kids are fun to watch. They are so good to support each other, sharing bikes, shoes, bad weather gear, tools. They step up to help when needed to get things set up for a race, they stick around to clean up afterwards, even though they have a long drive back to their respective colleges.

We got up Saturday morning to beautiful weather. We headed over to "Bread" the starting place for the Time Trial. As we ate breakfast inside "Bread" the weather went from beautiful, to a little windy, to a few rain drops, to lots of rain drops, to snow. It was sticking on the ground here, so quickly we decided that we couldn't do the Time Trial that ended up on the mountain. We headed back to the Hotel to get warm and have Hot Chocolate.

By afternoon when it was time for the Criterium to start the weather had improved some. We started the first race with just wet ground, but the weather changed every few minutes, sun shining, to rain, to hail, to snow, back to sun, more rain. We had Richard, Mark and James rotating on their motorcycles and being in the wheel pit. We didn't have to much action in the wheel pit.

Anne and I were on the stage, doing our best to keep warm in the changing weather.

Rachael had the best seat for the day, she stayed in the Jeep (you can see it just behind the stage) watching movies on the DVD player or on my IPOD.

When the racing was done we had dinner at Steamworks. It is our favorite place to eat in Durango. We enjoy eating the peanuts while we wait for a seat, throwing the shells on the floor. They make their own creme soda, which Rachael loves.

Sunday was the circuit race around the campus of Fort LewisCollege. The weather was much better, I even took the coat off for a few minutes during the day. The Collegiate races went great and the kids were all on their way by 1:00, we finished with the other USCF category races and we also hit the road. I am glad that Richard enjoys driving, I am able to get comfortable in the passenger seat and read the whoe drive. I read "My Sister's Keeper" by Jodi Picoult during this trip. I enjoyed the book and am excited to see how they do the book as a movie.
